Austrian mezzo-soprano Sophie Renart makes her debut on the BIS label with a collection of songs by Schubert, her native composer. The title, *Will-o’-the-Wisp*, and the concept behind the selection stem from “The Fisherman’s Love,” a piece she holds dear. In this song, she compares the light filtering from her beloved’s room to the flickering of will-o’-the-wisps, singing of the thrill of heading to a secret rendezvous and a happiness that seems almost otherworldly. Renart explains that a defining feature of Schubert’s music is its ability to blur the line between reality and the world of dreams and desires, and she has selected works that evoke this very fluctuation between dream and reality. This program showcases a mezzo-soprano voice that combines delicate brightness, subtle nuances, and power. Renato won third prize in the vocal category at the 2014 International Mozart Competition in Salzburg, was selected as a “Talent of the Year” artist at the Vienna Konzerthaus for the 2017–18 season, and appeared in *The Magic Flute* at the Salzburg Festival in 2020 and 2022.
