[Celebrating His 90th Birthday: Paavo Järvi Presents the World of His Close Friend Arvo Pärt on Vinyl] Estonian composer Arvo Pärt turned 90 on September 11, 2025. For Paavo Järvi, who also grew up in a musical family in Estonia, Pärt has been a “super-cool friend in a denim jacket and baseball cap” since childhood. While Paavo has performed Pärt’s works all over the world and has made several recordings, for this project celebrating the composer’s 90th birthday, he finally recorded “Credo”—a piece he had always longed to perform—creating a truly monumental album. Written during a turning point in Pärt’s style, “Credo” is a work for choir, orchestra, and piano that combines the beauty characteristic of his later years with avant-garde elements and a sense of intensity. Intended to crystallize the essence of Christ’s teaching in the Sermon on the Mount—“Do not repay evil with evil”—it was premiered in 1968 in Tallinn (now the capital of Estonia) during the Soviet era, conducted by Paavo’s father, Neeme Järvi. The composition builds to a grand climax through a bold interplay between the choir and orchestra, culminating in the piano’s quotation of Bach’s “Prelude No. 1 from Book 1 of The Well-Tempered Clavier.” Although the premiere was met with enthusiastic support from the audience, Soviet authorities deemed it a political provocation and banned subsequent performances. This led to Neeme—who had reportedly been under surveillance for some time—being blacklisted, which ultimately prompted the decision to leave Estonia; the Järvi family, including Paavo, emigrated to the United States in 1980. Meanwhile, “Silhouette” is considered a tribute to Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower. It evolves from a typical Pärt-esque opening featuring bells into a waltz-like main section, revealing influences from modern and contemporary French music and showcasing the evolution of Pärt’s compositional style. Dedicated to Paavo Järvi and the Orchestre de Paris, where he served as music director at the time, the piece premiered in 2015 at the newly opened Philharmonie de Paris. It also received its Japanese premiere during the NHK Symphony Orchestra’s performance in February 2017, but this is reportedly the first time it has been recorded. The album also includes works such as “Fratres” and “Cantus,” which are among Paavo’s specialties. Paavo weaves these works—which are deeply connected to his own musical journey—with profound empathy, performing them dynamically yet with a sense of deep prayer.
