Description:
[The Diverse World of Little-Known French Church Music from the Early 17th Century] This album brings together rare examples of French church music based on traditions dating back to the mid-17th century, before the distinctive French musical style was established during the reign of Louis XIV. Most of the pieces were selected from two manuscripts discovered in Tours, central France, and Paris, in which the composers’ names are rarely recorded. The instrumental accompaniment supporting the singers reciting the prayer texts consists solely of woodwind cornets (zinks) and basso continuo. The numerous early motets follow an even older church music tradition, interpreted in a performance style where the bass wind instrument, the serpent, supports the vocal ensemble—including a children’s choir—while the cornetto provides the upper voices. These pieces strongly evoke a connection to earlier Renaissance polyphonic music, distinct from the works left behind by composers who served in Louis XIV’s royal chapel. Based on the few works that are barely signed, it is believed that the pieces in both manuscripts convey the unique traditions of southern France. With the support of a reliable instrumental ensemble—including period orchestras such as Les Siècles conducted by Roto, Patrick Vivar, a master of the bass wind instruments who performs both with orchestras and as a soloist, and Haruna Nakaya, who is equally adept at the viola da gamba and keyboard instruments (though she focuses solely on the organ on this recording), Armango—the new music director of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles—presents a collection of previously unknown works with thoughtful, musically rich interpretations.
