Description:
Max Meyer-Olbersleben was a composer who studied under Franz Liszt and Joseph Rheinberger and served as a bridge between traditional compositional techniques and the ideals of the New German School that emerged in the late 19th century. He spent most of his life in Würzburg, where he played a leading role in the local music scene as director of the music academy and choir conductor. While his oeuvre centers on choral works and art songs, this program focuses on his chamber music. The Sonata, Op. 14, was originally conceived for the “viola alta,” a large-scale viola designed by Hermann Ritter (1849–1926), a contemporary composer with whom Meyer-Albersleben was acquainted. However, since this instrument has been lost and is currently the subject of ongoing restoration research, this recording features a standard viola. The “Sonata in the Style of a Lament,” composed in his later years, is a work written in memory of Ritter. Naxos Japan
