Carl Czerny is known today primarily as the composer of educational etudes, but this recognition represents only one facet of his legacy. His catalog numbers reached 861, though he actually composed even more works. Within the lineage stretching from his teacher Beethoven to his pupil Liszt, his music serves as a crucial bridge linking the Classical and Romantic eras, giving it immense historical significance. Recent research into the vast collection of his autograph manuscripts held by the Vienna Musikverein has led to a reappraisal of him not merely as a "master of etudes," but as a pioneering composer who opened the door to Romanticism. Czerny composed numerous brilliant virtuoso works that captivated the Biedermeier salons of Vienna at the time. The four pieces for two pianos and piano duet heard here are prime examples of this. They were written with the clear intention of overwhelming and delighting the audience. The frequent use of the word "Brillant" (brilliant) in their titles eloquently speaks to their character. The performers are Zhao Jinshu, who delivered a splendid performance in the first collection, and Liang Haoyue, active primarily in the United States as a soloist and chamber musician.Both hold Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degrees in piano performance from the University of North Texas.
