The name of Croatian composer Jelena Bejac began to be mentioned outside her homeland only in the 21st century. She gained particular attention in 2023, the centenary of her death. Born in Budapest in 1885 and passing away in Munich in 1923, she was raised in an aristocratic family. Due to her linguistic and cultural background, she is positioned as a "Central European composer." Her style is rooted in Romanticism while incorporating elements of Impressionism and Expressionism, showing a particularly unique depth in her later works. This two-disc album presents the complete collection of her orchestral works. Conducted by her fellow countryman, Lepsic, Music Director of the Leipzig City Opera, and performed by the Staatskapelle Weimar, where he will assume the role of Chief Conductor in 2024. Centered around two major works—the "Piano Concerto in G minor," which bears the influence of Rachmaninoff, and the "Symphony in F-sharp minor," partially premiered in Vienna—it also includes the "Fantasy Concertante" with its advanced harmonies, the "Overture" embodying the traditional character of German music, as well as orchestral songs based on poems by Karl Kraus and Rainer Maria Rilke, and an orchestral version of the "Nocturnes."
