Description:
【A Musical Portrait of Barbara Strozzi by Two Leading Early Music Sopranos】 Barbara Strozzi was a 17th-century Venetian composer, born to poet and librettist Giulio Strozzi and trained by Francesco Cavalli, a leading pupil of Monteverdi. Her father Giulio provided her with a rigorous education from an early age, and she demonstrated exceptional musical talent. She was a rare figure for her time, able to publish her own music and earn a living from it, just like male composers. Her works are based on the Second Practice (seconda pratica), a compositional approach championed by Monteverdi and Cavalli that effectively conveyed the meaning and emotion embedded within the lyrics. At times, she employed intensely rich expressions that rivaled or even surpassed theirs. This album is structured as a five-part portrait, using music to trace Barbara's life, primarily selecting duets from her published collections. It includes her representative works such as "Secret Lover" and "Heraclitus in Love," with two leading sopranos of the modern early music world, Dorothee Mills and Hana Brašiková, masterfully portraying the intense passion with their exceptional vocal artistry. The German Hathor Consort, named after the Egyptian goddess Hathor, is a period instrument ensemble founded in 2012 by viola da gamba player Romina Rischka. For this recording, alongside the standard basso continuo instruments—viola da gamba, lute & guitar, organ, and harp, the traditional basso continuo instruments. It also incorporates the rillone, a stringed instrument with multiple sympathetic strings; the nyckelharpa, a bowed string instrument of Nordic origin featuring tangent keys; and the saltério, a unique instrument producing sound by striking or plucking strings stretched across a box. These instruments accompany the singing, enhancing its emotional expression. This masterpiece proudly proclaims Barbara Strozzi as one of the greatest composers of the 17th century!
