Description:
Cooper, who made her recording debut as a beloved student of Brendel and quickly established a high reputation for her performances of Mozart and Schubert, is now a veteran performer representing the British music scene. Now, her first album of Beethoven sonatas is being released. The program consists of the last three sonatas, a long-awaited recording. She once felt that she had to struggle with much of Beethoven's music, but in her sixties, through the Diabelli Variations, she encountered the world of Beethoven's late period and found joy in playing the works not as a struggle but as an embrace. After that, she felt that playing the last three sonatas as a set was a journey, a story she could empathize with wholeheartedly, and she decided to make the recording. Cooper, who finds the core of each sonata in the slow movement and says she feels irreplaceable bliss when the end of No. 32 quietly concludes in C major, does not give the impression of grandiloquence or novelty, but her performance is by no means calm throughout, incorporating both intensity and humor to create a richly undulating performance. Each phrase is meticulously carved, and combined with a sound that radiates brightness and warmth from soft to loud passages, you can immerse yourself in the deep satisfaction of hearing a masterful performance of a great work. In the liner notes, she writes that only silence is fitting after this, yet she includes a lesser-known piece by Bartók at the album's close. This is a lament, imbued with sorrow, where fragmentary melodies layer over descending triads. Enclosed within an arc of dynamics that rises from pianissimo to fortissimo and then returns, it invites the listener into contemplation with its unique resonance. It is a deeply satisfying album conveying the state of mind of a veteran performer. ※The domestic edition includes Japanese liner notes by Yoshiko Ikuma. Naxos Japan
