Toscha Seidler (1899-1962) was born in Odessa, Ukraine, the same hometown as Oistrakh and Milstein. His teacher Auer compared him and Heifetz, who were only 1 year and 3 months apart in age, to "an angel and a devil." After his successful debut at Carnegie Hall in April 1918, he was immediately signed to an exclusive contract with Columbia Records in the US. This recording captures his earliest work. What stands out is his tempo choices, featuring dramatic contrasts in pace, and his highly individual articulation, rarely heard in modern performances. In "Zigeunerweisen," the first half moves slowly, almost hesitant to advance, while the second half accelerates significantly. Yet, within this, there is a free and flexible use of tempo that avoids any mechanical impression. In slower pieces like Tchaikovsky's "Andante cantabile," one hears a distinctive, unique phrasing that makes one wonder if he is silently singing the lyrics in his mind.New York Tribune critic H.E. Krehbiel described Seidel's playing as "a bowing that races, blazes, and breathes, a tone both solid and rich, an unforgettable performance."
