[Bolt's British Music Collection: BBC Archive Recordings Including the First Performance of the "London Symphony" at the Proms] Live recordings by Bult, highly regarded as an interpreter of modern British music, emerge from the BBC archives. This collection gathers works by composers with whom Bult had personal connections: Vaughan Williams' "London Symphony," in which Bult was involved with the revision; works by Butterworth, bound by musical respect; and works by Moran, with whom Bult initially had a complex relationship but later developed a deep mutual understanding. Regarding the 1971 Proms performance of the "London Symphony," The Daily Telegraph at the time praised it as "a performance of quiet dignity, captivating the audience to the very end with a masterful understanding of the work." The unique tension and exhilaration of a live performance greatly contributed to the playing, making the audience's enthusiastic reaction after the concert entirely understandable. Bowlt frequently performed "The Young Man from Shropshire," with about four recordings known to date. In this studio live recording at age 83, one can still hear the passionate climax.Moulin was initially critical of Bort's performances, but after the latter conducted his own symphony following World War II, he remarked, "He knew the score inside out, brought ideas and suggestions, and delivered a magnificent performance." In this recording of "Symphonietta," the power of the outer movements and the lyrical beauty demonstrate Bort's profound understanding of the work. This marks the first release of these recordings, except for the "Symphonietta" released over 25 years ago by BBC Radio Classics.
