Voices Suaves, a group of talented singers trained at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis—a major hub for early music research and performance practice—has finally recorded a collection of vocal works by Carissimi, a leading master of Italian mid-Baroque. Calistimi flourished in mid-17th century Rome, the seat of Western Catholicism at the Vatican Palace. As a key composer for the influential Society of Jesus, he premiered numerous religious dramas (oratorios), becoming a pioneer in this genre. He had many disciples, and his influence extended beyond Italy to the next generation of masters who visited Rome, including France's Charpentier and Austria's Kerl. This recording features one of his representative oratorios, "The Story of Jephthah," along with two polyphonic motets. It also includes "Musical Dialogues" by Domenico Mazzocchi, who was over ten years older than Carissimi and also based his activities in Rome. His sound, which makes full use of chromaticism, seems to bridge the gap between the sound of the 16th-century generation, such as Monteverdi, and Carissimi's style. This selection is highly rewarding to listen to when considering the establishment of the oratorio genre.The instrumental ensemble consists solely of three bowed strings, a theorbo, and a keyboard (with additions in 'The Story of Jephthah' referencing other works by Carissimi), yet the performance is astonishingly rich in nuance. This is achieved through the singers' meticulous interpretations, each showcasing a distinctive voice, drawing the ear to individual timbres and lyrical expressions.
