Aliona Baeva thrilled Japanese music fans with her superb Shostakovich performance with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra during her April 2025 visit to Japan. Her second release with ALPHA, alongside her partner of over a decade, Vadim Kholodenko, is a delightful collection featuring the first volume of Beethoven's complete violin sonatas, including the "Spring," "Kreutzer," and the Third Sonata. These works were composed between 1797 and 1803, a period when Beethoven established his fame across Europe while simultaneously facing the tragedy of his declining hearing. A notable feature of this recording is its use of the 2020 Bärenreiter New Edition and its deeply researched approach to the performance practices of the time. The duo meticulously researched period sources, boldly introducing ornamentation and improvisational elements within fermatas. They reinterpret the scores not as fixed texts, but as open works embracing the performer's spontaneous contributions.
