The Elgar Society is a charitable organization founded in 1951 under the patronage of Adrian Boult, with the aim of promoting Elgar's music, especially to the younger generation, and subsidizing educational activities and the Museum of his birthplace, as well as publishing an academic journal and newsletter. This album celebrates the 75th anniversary of the society's founding and features choral works from the early years of his creative career to his mature years, including five world premiere recordings. The Royal Hospital Chelsea is a veterans' institution founded in 1682, and the Christopher Wren-designed building is one of London's most famous landmarks.Its chapel choir is a professional choir, with a basic formation of 12 members, but the number was increased as needed at the time of recording to ensure a rich sound appropriate for the album's content.
