Description:

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Elgar Society of Great Britain, founded in 1951, the Elgar from Archives series of reissues of historical recordings is launched. The first work is from the acoustic recording era and includes Elgar's own Enigma Variations and the first ever recordings of his Violin Sonata and String Quartet; many of the performances are shortened versions to fit the recording time of the SP recordings, but the tempo setting by the composer himself and the orchestra's The recordings are valuable in that they show the actual performance of the works at the time they were written, including the composer's own tempo setting and the frequent portamento of the orchestra. The average playing time of the Enigma Variations today is around 30 minutes, but the recording here is much shorter, at 26.5 minutes for the Elgar-conducted version and 24.5 minutes for the Wood-conducted version, and both are characterized by a light tempo setting. The difference is especially noticeable in the Nimrod, which today tends to be played as a memorial piece, and if you are looking for a solemn, grandiose, and "tear-jerking" performance, you may feel as if you have been let down. The remastering attempts to preserve the instrumental textures as much as possible while keeping noise quite low for an SP reissue.Acoustic recordings are made with trumpets without microphones, and it is inevitable that the balance will be skewed in a performance as large as that of an orchestra, and the woodwinds tend to sound louder in these recordings. The dynamic range is limited, and the standard of orchestral playing is not up to today's standards, but the performances by the composer himself and his allies are worthwhile in their own right.
