【Night Music Only a Hardcore Early Music Plucked-String Player with Diverse Experience Can Achieve】 Slovenian plucked-string player Bor Zljan, who has gained worldwide recognition in both lute research and performance while also deepening his expertise in other genres highly compatible with early music, such as jazz and improvisation. While his solo albums released on the RICERCAR label include a collection of Dowland's lute works (RIC425), this new recording features the orphalium, a metal-stringed plucked instrument beloved in 16th-17th century England alongside the lute. Joined by Clara Bruné, who brings diverse stage performance experience in theater, dance, and singing, they present a new program themed around "night." Alongside music by composers contemporary with Dowland, the recording weaves in works from 20th-century Britain—a period of renewed interest in early music—as well as quiet pieces by Thelonious Monk and Pink Floyd. Several tracks feature recitations of poetry, including works by the early 19th-century poet Byron, flexibly drawing upon compositions created at various points along the journey from the present day back to Dowland's era.While electric olpharions with electronic amplification are used sparingly, Zuryan's delicate playing seamlessly connects with the feel of acoustic performance, yielding a sound that dissolves into the melancholy mood permeating the entire album. Furthermore, the booklet features poems by singer Brune, inspired by the recorded works, presented in both English and French, creating a structure that literarily complements the auditory experience.
