Description:
The arpeggione, invented in 1823, is an instrument with guitar-like frets yet played with a bow. This work features this rare instrument alongside the Schrammel harmonica—a chromatic button accordion unique to Vienna—and a double-neck contraguitar with bass sympathetic strings, both instruments frequently used in traditional Viennese music. Considering that Johann Georg Stauffer, inventor of the arpeggione, was also involved in the early development of the contraguitar, and that the Schrammel harmonica also originated in Vienna during the same period, this ensemble can be seen as a historically natural combination. Additionally, a violin zither made in the first half of the 20th century is used in some parts. This instrument features 18 strings played with a bow held in the right hand and 25 strings plucked with the left hand, arranged vertically. These strings act somewhat like resonating strings, producing an exceptionally beautiful sound. While seemingly unrelated at first glance, this instrument actually traces its origins back to the bowed zither, invented the same year as the arpeggione. The result is the creation of a unique, poetic, and lyrical sound world.Featuring the beloved Arpeggione Sonata, as well as Ländler dances and song arrangements, this recording presents Schubert's melodies brimming with Viennese sentiment.
