Born in 1946 as the son of a pastor, he faced the hardship of being denied admission to music academy under the Soviet regime due to his religious background. After studying double bass in Lithuania and transitioning to composition following military service, he began with avant-garde techniques influenced by Lutosławski, Penderecki, and George Crumb. He eventually established a unique idiom blending the simple melodies of Latvian folk songs with modern techniques. For Vasks, composing was an act of resisting the destructive forces of modern society, pointing toward faith and hope. He became celebrated as a composer symbolizing post-independence Latvia, his music praised as embodying the spirit of Nordic and Baltic culture. This 3-disc box set commemorates the 80th anniversary of his birth in 2026. It includes representative works such as symphonies, concertos, and vocal music.
