Description:

The Nordic culture, steeped in majestic nature and mythology, has nurtured the creativity of many artists throughout its long history. In this album, Finnish hornist Markus Masqnitti and pianist Martin Sturfalt vividly illustrate the breadth of this Nordic spirit through a wide variety of works from different periods. All of the pieces are set against a background of nature and folklore, naturally blending the breath of traditional folk songs with modern classical diction. The powerful expression of the horns and the depth of sound that evokes vast landscapes bring the charm of Nordic music to life in three dimensions. The centerpiece of the program is Lentchen's "From Jotunheim," a suite in five movements that evokes the atmosphere of the Norwegian land, skillfully interwoven with cattle songs, lullabies, and folk dances. This and other diverse works in the program vividly demonstrate the richness of Scandinavian music. Markus Maskunitti was born in Rauma, Finland. He studied at the Sibelius Academy, won a prize at the ARD Munich International Music Competition, and was named "Brass Player of the Year" in 1992. After working with the Tapiola Sinfonietta, he has held the positions of deputy principal of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, principal of the Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin, and principal of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He was principal of the Stockholm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 2007-2024 and has an extensive record of chamber music. Martin Sturfalt began playing the piano at the age of 4 and made his debut at the age of 11. He studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and has performed extensively throughout Europe and Asia. Naxos Japan
