The world of one of the greatest female composers of the mid-baroque period, played by a group of talented old-time musicians with the genius of contemporary music. There were certainly women composers before the 18th century, although their number was small. This album features the works of Barbara Strozzi, who is often talked about as one of the most talented representatives of the Italian mid-Baroque period, with some pieces by male composers of the same period, performed by an ensemble at the forefront of Italian music and based on the latest research. Her father was Giulio Strozzi, a music-loving poet from a prominent Venetian family who was also a member of the "Accademia of the Anonymous," and she sang in the academia that her father founded, and she established her own career as a musician despite the harsh criticism she faced in a male-dominated society. Laura Cutrani, who sings solo in this recording of works from three books published in the 1650s, shows great aptitude for contemporary works and a deep interest in ancient music, and here, too, she sings with a free and open voice that conveys the nuances of the lyrics in a detailed way while keeping in mind the period style. The singer is a master of the modern style and has a deep interest in ancient music.Baroque harps (double harp), theorbo, and other string instruments provide effective sound effects in the bass passages, and the bowed string players gracefully and agilely approach the charms of the music in their instrumental ensembles. Starting with a piece from his debut work of 1644, which is also well represented in the instrumental arrangement, and ending with the masterpiece "Betrayal," in which vivid indignation and anger coexist with light-hearted freedom, this is a disc that immerses the listener in Barbara Strozzi's sound world, which is well worth listening to.
