Description:

Dutch composer Jan van Hilsse was born into a family of theologians and showed a talent for piano performance from an early age. He studied at the Cologne Conservatory with Franz Würner and in Berlin with Engelbert Humperdinck, where he honed his compositional skills. His works were highly acclaimed, winning numerous awards, but around the outbreak of World War I, he lost his position in the Netherlands due to disputes with orchestras, and most of his works were put in storage. Zlammit" is a cantata about a woman from the Old Testament "Song of Songs. It was conceived as a graduation project at the Cologne Conservatory of Music, but the premiere was cancelled because the composer was forced to leave the conservatory before completing his studies, and was finally premiered on a grand scale in Arnhem in 1904 under the composer's own baton with about 120 orchestra players and over 400 chorus members. Although the text was greatly altered from the original poem, newspaper reviews at the time praised the work for its "earnest intention to depict a woman's self-sacrificing love. On the other hand, "The Circle of Life" is a symphonic work based on Rilke's poem, depicting the concept that "life and death are one, and life is a fluid cycle with a beginning and an end.Although it was criticized as "German style" and unfavorable at the time of its premiere in 1935, it is now receiving a fair evaluation and is being performed more and more frequently.
