The cpo label's complete collection of Georg Philipp Telemann's violin concertos, which began recording in 2001, is finally complete! The project, which was spearheaded by Elizabeth Wolfish, a leading British Baroque violinist, and Wolfgang Hirschmann, a German musicologist and leading Telemann scholar who is responsible for the Telemann Editions of the Bärenräter label, has been brought to a conclusion with a performance by the renowned Austrian Baroque Orchestra, the Orfeo Baroque Orchestra. The project was concluded with a performance by the Orfeo Baroque Orchestra, a renowned Austrian orchestra of ancient music. This final volume of the collection features mainly concertos for two violins. In his 1740 autobiography, Telemann praised the talents of Pantaleon Häbenstreit, a colleague and concertmaster of the court orchestra while serving at the court of Eisenach (1709-1712). It seems that working with Häbenstreit improved Telemann's own violin skills and inspired him to compose, as evidenced in the concerto with two violins as solo instruments.The concertos for two violins, which appear to have been composed in the 1710s, represent a new experiment for the young Telemann. While modeled on the concertos of Italian composers such as Corelli and Vivaldi, the young Telemann's originality and ingenuity can be felt in the unique use of ritornello and the introduction of the polyphonic technique, as he sought to create a unique style. In addition to the four concertos for two violins, this CD also includes "Violin Concerto in G major," "Concerto for String Ensemble in E minor," which is also considered to be an early work, and "Concerto for Viola in G major," the most famous of Telemann's concertos and a masterpiece in the repertoire of violists even today. The booklet includes a list of Telemann's concertos on nine CDs, organized by genre and instrumentation, along with the key, TWV number, and volume and track number of the recording, making this a highly valuable reference work.
