Description:
The most famous masterpiece of French Baroque Christmas music from the home of Versailles] Charpentier was a genius representing the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, but was prevented from playing an active role in the French royal family by Lully, the royal music director. However, his contemporaries could not have been indifferent to his talent, and he was constantly patronized by religious institutions and prominent figures in Paris, and after the death of Lully, he was offered jobs by organizations related to the royal family. His masterpiece "Midnight Mass," written as music for the Christmas midnight mass, was also composed after Lully's death. The charm of the music, which weaves between tranquility and festivity while incorporating the tune of the traditional noel (the equivalent of carols in English-speaking countries, mainly sung outside the church), has not faded at all even several centuries later. The music has not lost its charm, even centuries later. It is a pleasure to hear this work in the latest recording by Marguerite Louise, a French performance group active in the same linguistic area.The instrumental ensemble consists of 18 string players, 3 recorders, 2 oboes and a bassoon, and a serpan (an old bass wind instrument widely used to accompany choirs). Two theorbo players also participate. The concert also includes a large organ solo by conductor Gaëtan Jari, as well as religious pieces by Charpentier and an arrangement of Noël's "Noël".
