The sumptuous lineup of singers gathered at Versailles to explore the essence of Monteverdi's final masterpiece. Monteverdi, the greatest master of the early Italian Baroque, premiered his last opera "The Crowning of Poppea" before his death at the age of 76. The story of the unfaithfulness of the Roman Emperor Nerone, who neglects his queen and is forced to marry the unfaithful Poppea, with the help of his talented young successor Cavalli and the brilliant Sacrati, Monteverdi, in his old age, created a musical story in three acts that is full of humanity. The extant manuscript score, as was usual in operas of the time, contains only bass instruments, but the vocal parts are remarkable for their richness, including a recitative that makes full use of the nuances of the verses and a magnificent polyphonic development, and it is no wonder that the opera was performed so frequently in the 17th century. The program includes Francesca Aspromonte in the title role, who has made many recordings as a soloist, and Balducci, who has attracted attention not only for his Baroque operas but also for his interpretations of songs, along with busy opera singers such as Zajcik and Scott, and veterans such as Lefriatre and Buffier, all of whom are at the forefront of singing in Europe. The leading singers of Europe, including veterans such as Lefriatre and Buffier, will gather at the Palace of Versailles.Stéphane Fugé's skill in bringing out the individuality of each singer and bringing the music together with solid dramatic coherence is nothing short of superb. The instrumental music is also very reliable, with only a small number of strings and bass instruments adding a surprisingly rich acoustic, making this a very rewarding recording of the entire work.
