[Many female composers will appear. We will explore the roots of the power hidden in women's choral music. The Ensemble Altera is a front-line American vocal group that has already released two albums on the ALPHA label under the direction of Christopher Lowry, a countertenor singer who also performs in baroque opera. This time, the ensemble will perform a program related to the Nativity at the end and beginning of the year with only two sopranos and an alto (including a male voice and Lowry himself), supported by a harp and an organ. The program consists mainly of modern and contemporary music from the 20th century onward, but also includes works from the Middle Ages and the Baroque. To shed light on the significance of women's presence at Christmas, where the Virgin Mary is a significant figure, eight female composers from a wide range of generations, including Hildegard von Bingen, Barbara Strozzi, Imogen Holst, and Karensa Briggs, are included on the album. Britten's "A Celebration of Carols," which makes up the second half of the album, is famous as a masterpiece for boys' chorus, but according to Lowry, it was originally intended for female voices.The thirteen-piece vocal ensemble sings with dignity, flexibility, and rich nuance, and the harp and organ add an exquisite and sometimes indescribable sound.
