[Bach full of life! Gamba Sonatas by Bau and Buccarella Teodoro Bau, born in Venice in 1992, is one of the most popular gamba players in the world today, and Andrea Buccarella, born in Rome in 1987, is a harpsichordist and conductor active worldwide. Both have won first prize at the Bruges International Competition for Old Music. Among the sonatas for obbligato harpsichord and solo instrument that Bach can be said to have established, the three sonatas with viola da gamba are important works to which Bach himself would have paid great attention. The two spirited musicians compare the equal parts of the gamba and harpsichord to a game of chess, sometimes leaning on each other, and at other times battling back and forth to create lively music. Also included is an arrangement of the Flute Sonata BWV 1030 (in D minor). Only the harpsichord part of the g minor part survives in a manuscript from the late 18th century, and although the melody instrument of that version is unknown, it is currently played on oboe or gamba.The two have modified this edition, modeled on the relationship between Sonata No. 1, BWV 1027, and its trio sonata version, BWV 1039, and included it here as the fourth sonata. Under the new sensibilities of Bau and Buccarella, this is a rewarding listening experience that brings out both the classical and innovative sides of Bach. Naxos Japan
