Hyeyoon Park

Hae-Yoon Park sharply cuts into the concertos of two composers who were forced to remain silent. Hae-Yoon Park, who is well-known in Japan for her several visits to the country, makes her first appearance on LINN. She will release an album featuring works that were forced to remain silent for political reasons, but overcame oppression and live on today. Shostakovich's Violin Concerto was written for Oistrakh and completed in 1948, but the composer was criticized by the Soviet authorities for his use of Zhidanov's somewhat avant-garde techniques, so the work was not released. The work finally saw the light of day in 1955, seven years after its composition, when it was premiered with Oistrakh playing solo and Mravinsky conducting. It is now considered Shostakovich's most symphonic masterpiece in terms of seriousness, passion, and originality, including the inclusion of a passacaglia in the third movement. Born in the Netherlands to a Jewish pianist mother, Henriette Bosmans was a gifted young woman who was active as a concert pianist and composer from her late teens. The "Concert Pieces" were composed after her fiancé, the violinist Francis Kuhne, died of a brain tumor in 1934, and were premiered with concertmaster Louis Zimmermann of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and Mengelberg conducting. The work is rhapsodic in character, with Jewish influences, but it is also introspective, reflecting personal tragedy and the difficulties of the times. Her works were banned from performance from mid-1942. With the expiration of the 70-year copyright protection period after her death, the work was first published in 2022. Hae-Yoon Park has successfully portrayed the sharpness and anguish of these works with her brilliant technique, incisive expression, deep tone, and interpretation. Shostakovich's "Theme and Variations," a study written when the composer was a student, is a gorgeous, fresh work that begins with simple ornamentation and gradually builds to complex counterpoint and orchestral techniques. With excellent support in the concerto work, Madarash and the WDR Symphony Orchestra give a performance that makes full use of the work's characteristics. Naxos Japan
