The long-awaited return of the box set of Mackerras' legacy with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra! Charles Mackerras' (1925-2010) Mozart is first mentioned in the context of the complete symphonic works he recorded with the Prague Chamber Orchestra for the TELARC label in the late 1980s. Later, however, he recorded Levin's version of the Requiem with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, for which he received a great deal of publicity while he was the conductor laureate, and his 2007 recording of the late symphonies won high acclaim, including the "2009 BBC Music Magazine Awards" for best recording of the year. The second symphony collection, which follows, is another unforgettable recording for LINN. The most distinctive feature of Levin's version of the "Requiem" is the "Amen Fugue," which is a sketch left by the composer and expanded to a reasonable size of one and a half minutes. It was also notable as the first "Requiem" recorded by Mackerras, who had a strong commitment to Mozart's works.The power and warmth of expression in the late symphonies (CDs 3 and 4) and the second symphony (CDs 1 and 2), both released in the last year of his life, are remarkable. The power and warmth of expression in the Symphonies No. 31 and No. 2 (CD 1 and 2) are remarkable. The second movement of Symphony No. 31 is recorded in two versions, the original and the version that was replaced at the request of Le Gros. The recording by LINN is also notable for its clear, wide-range recording that captures the full range of the performance's characteristics. This is a welcome box set of Mozart recordings by the maestro at a reasonable price on standard CD. The accompanying booklet (18 pages, including the lyrics to the "Requiem") is a modest 18 pages, but includes a 2020 article by Donald MacDonald, President of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, on his bond with Mackerras.
