Cesar Viana, a musicologist, conductor, and performer of shakuhachi and recorder, has a diverse style that blends elements of Eastern, Middle Eastern, and folk music with Western music. This album includes works composed between the 2010s and 2021. The Piano Sonata No. 1, composed during the new Corona pandemic, is a familiar work named after a Stephen Foster song. Piano Sonata No. 3, with its well-known chorale in the fourth movement, is dedicated to its performer, Carlos Marin Rayo. Various musical materials are used throughout, such as Japanese scales in "Prime Rimes," No. 9, "Hydrangeas," and the ancient Greek theme of "The Return of the Descendants of Hercules," which incorporates the Doric melody. Carlos Marin Rayo was born in Madrid, studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Frank van de Laar, studied historical keyboard instruments with Olga Pasichenko, and is active as a soloist and chamber musician.
