New recording of the successful work that marked the turning point of Handel's great career! The latest recording of "Alexander's Feast," the work that led Handel to emphasize dramatic music with an English libretto, was made at the 40-year-old Stiliarte Festival of Old Music. Zeffiro, whose orchestra is led by experienced Italian virtuosi, is joined by the Arnold Schoenberg Choir, known for its collaboration with Arnoncourt, who supported the festival in its early days, and three soloists to present a solid and precise interpretation that retains the dynamism of a live performance. When Handel composed and premiered "Alexander's Feast" in 1736, he was writing operas under pressure from other rival opera composers, but the great success of this work with an English libretto based on the works of the great 17th century poet, Dryden, prompted him to shift the main focus of his composition from Italian-language opera to English oratorio.
