Hans Gall was an Austrian-born composer, conductor, and musicologist. Inheriting the late Romantic tradition, which was linked to Brahms, his style was rooted in tonality and melodic beauty, which he maintained throughout his life. After teaching music in Vienna and Mainz, he fled to Scotland with the rise of the Nazis. After the war, he contributed to the world of music by teaching at the University of Edinburgh. He left many works for viola, and this album contains four pieces written during a period spanning about 40 years. While each piece has a different background and character, the melodic beauty, counterpoint, and calm atmosphere of the viola's timbre, which is unique to Gull, pervade the entire album. Hanna Pakkala is a Finnish viola player. She studied at the Sibelius Academy of Music and the Hans Eisler University of Music in Berlin, among others, and is principal of the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra and the Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra, and also devotes herself to teaching activities.
