Description:
Bach, who served as cantor of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig from 1723, arranged for four violins, two violas, and two cellos from the workshop of Johann Christian Hoffmann, an instrument maker in the area, in 1729 to strengthen the instruments of St. Thomas and St. Nikolai Church. It is believed that these instruments were most likely in Bach's own hands and played by Bach himself. Of these, one violin and one viola each from St. Thomas Church and one violin from St. Nicolai Church are still extant and can be seen in the exhibition room at St. Thomas Church. These instruments have been played since Bach's time, and while they have been modified to meet the demands of each period, they have remained in playable condition until the present day. This is the first time that this instrument has been used in a recording, and you can hear its sound in Bach's masterpiece from his last years. The album opens with a chorale from Cantata No. 75, which was first performed after Bach was appointed cantor of St. Thomas Church, and concludes with a chorale added at the end of the first edition of "The Technique of Fugue.
