Tommaso Traetta, born in 1727 in Vitonto, a town in southeastern Italy, studied under Nicola Porpora and others in Naples, where he made a name for himself as an opera composer before becoming music director at the court of Parma. In this region, he adopted the style of musical tragedies (tragedie lyrique) of Rameau and other French composers, and was very successful. Because of this success, he was invited by King Ekaterina II of Russia, who treated him well as court music director, and he composed many operas, seria, and religious music. However, his health failed in Russia, and he later returned to Italy via London, where he died in Venice. The oratorio "King Solomon" is based on the first chapter of the Book of Kings in the Old Testament and is about the Ark of the Covenant, which contains the tablets of the Ten Commandments of King Solomon and Moses. It was Traetta's debut work in Venice. In addition to King Solomon, the characters, including the Queen of Sheba, Abiathar, the priest Tsadok, and Adon the Ammonite, were all written in the female voice range for the excellent female singers of the Ospedaletto. The oratorio was a great success, and records show that it was performed many times after its premiere. The music and libretto were changed for the 1776 performance, but this performance is based on the original version. The arias that combine grandeur and grace are given to each role, one for each scene, and the aria for Solomon, the main character, is particularly powerful and is the highlight of the work. The few but effective additions to the chorus (three female voices) are also noteworthy. This recording was made at the Innsbruck Festival of Ancient Music in 2023, conducted by Christophe Rousset. Under the excellent direction of Rousset, who has performed and recorded valuable dramatic works by composers of the 18th century after the Baroque, such as Salieri and Gluck, young talented female singers who specialize in ancient music works and Baroque operas sang wonderfully. The Theresia is a period instrument orchestra, named after Maria Theresa, the "Empress," and formed in 2012.Today, the group has expanded its activities throughout Europe, releasing recordings of rare 18th century works with up-and-coming conductors on the CPO label.
