To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (1925-2012), one of the giants of 20th century vocal music, on May 28, 2025, the SOMM label, in cooperation with MusicPreserved, has released on CD a selection of live recordings from concerts held between 1960 and 1971. The label states that all of the recordings are first-time CD releases. According to the label, all of the recordings are being released on CD for the first time. The selections are, in order of recording: 1) Busoni songs on Goethe's poems, 2) songs by various composers on Goethe's poems, 3) Mahler songs, and 4) Kodály songs with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kodály, It seems that this is the first time to hear Dieskau's Kodály songs in repertoire. It is also noteworthy that he sings in Hungarian.Throughout the recording, his bright and powerful singing, typical of him in his mature years, is very impressive. CD 2 includes an interview (in English) conducted by John Transky, well known for his documentaries and writings on musicians, on the occasion of Dieskau's 75th and 80th birthdays. They discuss works from Schubert to Wagner, Mahler, Verdi, Messiaen, Britten, and others, interpretations of operatic roles, and collaborators such as Furtwängler and Karajan. The booklet includes a commentary by Transkei (in English), as well as a song list and lyrics (in the original language) and their English translations by Richard Jarman. There is no transcription of the interview. According to the label, the original tapes of CD1 5-10 (recorded at the Helsinki Music Festival) have been lost, so the BBC broadcast is used as the sound source. (Naxos Japan)
