The second in a series exploring important areas of Lassus's art with a full instrumental ensemble This is the second volume in the series exploring the Magnificat, a hymn to the Virgin for which Lassus, one of the greatest Renaissance composers of his time, left more than 100 examples during his long life. This time, however, a brass band consisting of two woodwind cornets, four sackbuts (trombones), and a dulcian (a bass woodwind instrument that was the predecessor of the bassoon) joined the choir, along with a single organ. A total of nine singers weave a polyphonic pattern with rich resonance. Eight Magnificats of various sizes, based on polyphonic motets by Lassus himself or his predecessors such as Jaques de Wert and Josquin Desprez, are performed alternately with the original works from which they were adapted, allowing the listener to appreciate the differences in technique of each composer and each work. Philip Cave conducts the ensemble with a comfortable stability, and Edward Higginbottom, who boasts a wealth of experience as a choral conductor himself, plays the organ.This 2-CD set is full of intellectual excitement and musical discovery, with a sense of the richness of the English ancient music scene, supported by a long tradition of choirs.
