This disc contains piano pieces written by Ukrainian composers. In addition to Lysenko, known for his study of the Ukrainian folk song "Dumka," and Levitsky, his pupil and renowned teacher, there are also Bortkiewicz, who was oppressed by the Soviet Union and the Nazis; Balbinsky and Kosenko, who were of the same generation as Levitsky and strongly influenced by the late Romantic period; and Lyatsinsky, who overcame criticism by Zhidanov in the 1940s and became a Lyatsinsky, also known as a symphony composer; and Silvestrov, who took refuge in Berlin after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, relocated his activities to Berlin, where he continues to work today. The works on this disc were composed between 1877 and 2005, and will allow the audience to experience anew the rich creativity of these composers, who during the Soviet era were recognized as "Russians" in their own right. Margaret Fingerhut, who will perform, is a pianist with a grandfather of Ukrainian origin, and currently lives and works mainly in London. She is also passionate about charity, and part of the proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to "British-Ukrainian Aid" to fund medical assistance in Ukraine. Naxos Japan
