Lalo's ambitious opera is now available in a powerful new recording with the best international cast! The story takes place in the land of Is, where the war with the neighboring kingdom led by Prince Karnak is finally coming to an end. The terms of the peace treaty are that Prince Karnak will marry Princess Margarede of Ith. However, her love is for Milio, the forgiving wife of her sister Rosen. This unfulfilled love fueled a desire for revenge that would eventually lead to a terrible flood. Edouard Lalo, who had been seeking success in opera, was greatly inspired by this story, and he created a tense and dramatic development that was beautifully portrayed in music. The characters are driven by intense passion and supported by a colorful orchestration strongly influenced by Wagner. Margarede, in particular, must be considered one of the most successful roles in French Romantic opera. After its completion in 1881, this opera was not performed until 1888, when it was premiered in Paris to great success. Although the performance lasted less than two hours, the scenes depicted in the play are truly dramatic. The festival in Brittany, the supernatural manifestation of Saint-Colantin, the wedding surrounded by the sound of the organ, and the climax - the wild expression is overwhelmingly powerful. Since the 1957 EMI recording by Cluytens, this work has never been well recorded, but suddenly a new recording from Hungary has appeared.In addition to the French singers, the Margalade is played by the great American mezzo Kate Aldrich and conducted by Gergi Vashej, who has earned a reputation for his high quality performances of Baroque, Romantic, and contemporary music. This is a truly exciting performance endorsed by the Centre de Musique Romantique de France (Palazzetto Bru Zane), which is eager to re-evaluate the music of the 19th century.
