Description:

The same type of instrument that Chopin played in Majorca! Chopin by Justin Taylor, a young standard-bearer of keyboard ancient instruments, is now available. Using a Pianino (upright piano), which was manufactured by Pleyel only between 1835 and 1842, this album contains mainly works written by Chopin on the same type of instrument in Majorca. Also included is Taylor's own arrangement of Bellini's "O Pure Goddess". . At the young age of 23, Justin Taylor won the first prize in the harpsichord section of the 2015 Bruges International Competition for Old Music, and is now a leading young harpsichordist and a virtuoso performer around the world. He has been playing not only harpsichord but also fortepiano for quite some time, and in 2025 he performed for the first time on fortepiano in Japan. He has made several recordings as a fortepiano player, but this time he is releasing Chopin! This is the world's first recording on an 1839 Pleyel pianino (upright piano) that has recently been restored by Olivier Fadini of France, a very important restorer of Pleyels from Chopin's time. Fadini's quest for an authentic tone and his personal restoration aesthetics and beliefs in every detail of the restoration make this a truly exceptional instrument that evokes Chopin's spirit in the present day. The Pianino Pleyel is the instrument with which Chopin completed his "24 Preludes" on the island of Majorca, and it evokes the intimate moments when Chopin confronted the depths of his own mind. This is even more so since the instruments used in the recording are from about the same period as those owned by Chopin. The French title of the CD, "Chopin Intime" (Intimate Chopin), is very appealing, as if Chopin were playing the piano as he saw fit, alone or with intimate friends. The version by Taylor herself, inspired by the piano arrangement by Chopin, is a happy surprise, as is the version of "O Pure Goddess" from Bellini's opera "Norma," which legendary mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot is believed to have sung with Chopin's piano accompaniment. Taylor's own version, inspired by Chopin's piano arrangement, is a happy surprise. Chopin was an innovator in piano music, but he was also a keen explorer of the music of previous eras, including Baroque music, which Liszt described as Chopin's "enthusiastic disciple of J.S. Bach. As a harpsichordist, Taylor, like Chopin, is a daily explorer of Baroque music. There is an intimate time there between these two timeless musicians. Naxos Japan
