Performers Tom Wimpenny (Organ) Recorded: May 30, June 1, and September 5, 2023 England,Christchurch Priory, Dorset Total running time: 73 min. English composer John Gardner played the organ from an early age and composed organ works throughout his life. His style is rhythmic and technical, while skillfully incorporating jazz, Renaissance, and Baroque techniques and classical counterpoint. The music also incorporates many elements of dance, and even the more serious pieces have occasional glimpses of humor. This album contains mostly works from 1952 to 1988. The album contains mostly works from 1952 to 1988, including his first organ piece "Wedding March," which he wrote for a married couple he knew as a professional composer right after the success of his First Symphony, and "Five Dances," written when he "preferred jazz to Beethoven" in his mature period. In 1947, he organized his works and began a new series of work numbers for inclusion in the "Official Catalogue. Although the early works were never destroyed, Gardner himself was critical of the quality of the early works, and they were never performed and long forgotten. After his death, his family published some of them as "Old Series (old work numbers)". The "Introduction, Ground and Coda" and "Coronation Postlude" on this album are taken from there. The virtuoso Tom Wimpenny gives a splendid performance. (Naxos Japan)
