Louise Adolpha Le Beau, active in the 19th century, was described as "Germany's first outstanding female composer. She received her musical education at an early age, studying piano with Clara Schumann and composition with Josef Gabriel Reinberger in Munich, upon the recommendation of Hermann Levy and Hans von Bülow. He accepted her as a student after hearing her Violin Sonata, Op. 1, and was reportedly astonished by the music, which he described as "so masculine, it is hard to believe it was written by a woman. She went on to write a wide variety of symphonies, piano works, and chamber music, most notably vocal works, many of which were published during her lifetime, but she was not inspired to become a female composer until her only opera, Derverzauberte Kalif (The Enchanted Caliph), written in 1902, was removed from the program of the Karlsruhe Opera House. This led to the publication of "Memoirs of a Woman Composer" in 1910 to denounce the prejudice against women composers. The book is also a valuable record of the musical world of her time. This album contains her songs and piano quartets; Op. 4 was composed in 1865 and published in 1877. It is a youthful work with texts by German Romantic poets; Op. 11, "Five Songs," was written in 1876, especially "Kornblumen und Haidekraut," which is a wonderful blend of poetic narration and musical expression, a work that Rheinberger also praised. It can be heard here in a version for piano quartet accompaniment arranged by Henrik Ajax. The "Three Songs," Op. 18, was written in 1879, after Rheinberger had left him on his own. They are shorter than his earlier works and are characterized by intense emotional expression and rapidly changing tonalities. Three Songs, Op. 39, was composed between 1884 and 1890, based on a poem by the poet Rudolf Gerns. The Three Songs for Alto and Violin, Op. 45, completed in 1898, was highly praised by critics for its originality. The Piano Quartet, Op. 28, is one of her most important chamber works, composed in 1883 and premiered at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig in December of the same year. The piece, which also shows the influence of Mendelssohn, was the last work in which LeBeau adhered to the classical style, and the second movement, "Tempo di mazurka," in particular, was highly praised for its originality. Le Beau Ensemble was formed by five female musicians from the Saar Music Academy and received the Zonta Women Musicians Award in 2023! (Naxos Japan)
