Description:

The complete works for solo piano by Ravel, who will celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth in 2025. Although Ravel was a self-critical and cautious composer, his published works are highly accomplished, and many of them continue to be performed and recorded today. Although he himself was not a virtuoso pianist, he composed works that required a high level of technique and made excellent use of the piano's performance effects and expressive power. The performer Bavouzet compares this to a miracle. He also often orchestrated his own piano works, opening up a wide variety of possibilities for performers and interpreters. Ravel's piano music is also notable for reflecting themes that fascinated him throughout his life. The sound of bells ("The Valley of the Bells," "The Gallows"), flowing water ("Water Play," "Little Boat on the Sea"), Spanish influence ("Grotesque Serenade," "Morning Song of a Clown"), and his particular favorite, the minuets as dances (five composed). Bavouzet says he reads in Ravel a sense of spice, a sense of desolation that he associates with Schubert, and an orchestral sense of color. (C)RS
