This year's selection includes three symphonies from 1775-76, when Haydn had ample experience composing for the Marquise of Esterházy and had more opportunities to write symphonies for the more extensive instrumentation, as well as the "Toy Symphony," a work that has not been performed since it was discovered in the 20th century that it was not written by Joseph Haydn, Since it was discovered in the 20th century that it was not written by Joseph Haydn, many different theories have been proposed, such as that it was written by Leopold Mozart or Edmund Angela, but there is no doubt that it is a genuine 18th century work whose score existed at least in the 1760s, and it was recorded with rarely used old instruments. It is a landmark to hear this rarely recorded work on ancient instruments, conducted with skill by the brilliant Antonini.Of the three Haydn compositions, the relatively well-known No. 69 is named after Loudon (Loudon), an old general who continued to achieve success in battle until his later years. The trumpet and timpani add to the sound. The 66th is relatively small in size, but the richness of Haydn's artistry can be felt in the rich sound production. The Basel Chamber Orchestra, which also includes the virtuoso Emiliano Rodolfi (oboe), a member of Il Giardino armonico and Zeffiro, and the talented Carles Cristobal (bassoon), a much sought-after player of ancient instruments, is also very mobile and reliable. The orchestra's usual commentary (in English, French, and German), based on the latest research by musicologist Christian Moritz Bauer, conveys the depth of Haydn's works to the full. A luxury analog edition is now available. (Naxos Japan)
