The masterpiece of 17th century French opera, "Alceste," which has been brilliantly recorded by Margoire (1994) and Rousset (2017), is now available in an astonishing new masterpiece recorded in the home of French opera, the Palace of Versailles. This lyric tragedy, first performed in 1674 by Lully, the royal music director to the Sun King Louis XIV, was enthusiastically received by the royal family and became a new classic, despite the anti-Lully atmosphere, with the help of Quinault, an exceptional scriptwriter. In five acts, the hero Alcide (Hercules), a friend of the king, descends into the underworld to rescue Queen Alceste, who has chosen to die in accordance with the oracle in order to save King Admétrate, who has lost his life in battle. The story is told in five acts. Jance and Oviti, two of the greatest singers of all time, play the Queen and the King, and Nathan Berg, who has been active in a wide range of roles, plays Alcide with expressive singing, and the other singers bring their deep roles to life vividly.The orchestra, led by keyboardist Marie Van Rijn and featuring a bass ensemble that enhances the poetry and singing, is composed of talented musicians such as Jean-François Madouf, who plays the natural trumpet without holes, and Vincent Robin, who switches between oboe and musette (bellows-style bagpipes).
