James Ehnes, whose previous album of Sibelius' complete violin works (CHSA5267) was critically acclaimed by The Guardian and various other magazines. This time he is accompanied by the BBC Philharmonic, led by Spanish conductor Juanjo Mena, who performs three works by Sarasate. Born in Spain, Sarasate studied at the Paris Conservatory as a child and spent the rest of his life in Paris. Many composers dedicated concertos to him, including Lalo's "Spanish Symphony" and Saint-Saens' Third Violin Concerto, both of which were written for Sarasate. In addition, Sarasate's own "Carmen Fantasy" is also included. Aeneas sings the melodies with passion, and especially in the "Carmen Fantasy," he makes full use of a variety of techniques in a dynamic performance. Naxos Japan
