This is an excellent opportunity to get a closer look at the true face of an emperor who had a tremendous influence on the history of Western art. The Habsburg Emperor Carl V reigned over Europe in the middle of the 16th century, ruling Iberia, the Netherlands, and the New World as King Carlos I of Spain, and exerting an enormous influence on the German-speaking world as the leader of the Holy Roman Empire. Although his reign was marked by many hardships, including the Italian wars and conflicts with Lutheran Protestantism, it was also a time of great refinement in court art, which attracted the best talents in every cultural field. The work here sheds light not on the splendor and majesty of the emperor in public life, but on the quiet life of Carl in his late years as a hermit in a Spanish monastery, and presents a musical portrait of an art lover on his way to death by pursuing the best of the polyphonic art he loved with a small orchestra. Five talented singers, all well versed in Renaissance singing, join Jan van Outreife on the lute to create an intimate and rich polyphonic world of polyphonic church music, songs with lute accompaniment, and lute solos.It is also noteworthy that the selection is not a work by Morales, which was actually sung at the funeral, but a substantial work by Mansicourt, who was invited to join the royal Flemish choir when Felipe II succeeded to the throne of Spain two years before the death of King Karl V.
