Pavane for the Late Princess Manuel de Falla(1876-1946): 5-7. 5-7. night in the garden of Spain The Triangle Hat, Suite 1 14-16. The Triangle Hat, Suite 2 Performers Sylvie MERCIER (Piano) ...5-7 Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Constantin Silvestri(Conductor) Recordings (all live/mono): November 25, 1966 Colston Hall, Bristol...8-16 March 31, 1967 Winter Gardens, Bournemouth...1-3 April 22, 1968 Winter Gardens, Bournemouth...4-7 Running time: 73 min. Romanian conductor Constantin Silvestri (1913-1969) is known for his incandescent passion, deep poetic artistry, and original interpretations that can sometimes be described as creative. In 1967 he became a British citizen and died in Bournemouth about two years later. This album is a collection of works on Spanish themes, a rarity for Silvestri, who often recorded Russian and Eastern European works, from sources found in his private collection after his death. The two works by Falla, in particular, are in his repertoire for the first time, and although the same performance of "Iberia" had been released on a private label in the past, this is the first time it has been released from an authorized source. EMI has a recording of "Pavane for a Dead Princess" from the same year.Sylvie Mercier, who plays with him in "A Night in the Garden of Spain," is a pianist who was born in Paris in 1934 and was active mainly in France, studying under Marcel Champy and Wilhelm Kemp, and is known for her exchanges with the conductor Ataulfo Argenta, but only a few of his recordings remain on French labels such as DECCA. The appearance of these live recordings is long-awaited by piano fans. Although both recordings are in monaural, Paul Bailey's careful re-mastering has resulted in a natural noise reduction, and the sound is very easy to listen to, with a good breadth of soundstage and a wide dynamic range. This is a rare opportunity to hear an unknown side of Silvestri. (Naxos Japan)
