The most famous opera based on the ancient playwright Euripides' tragedy "Iphigenia of Tauris" is Gluck's masterpiece "Iphigenie of Tauride" (1779), an important composer in the history of opera. However, an earlier composer had already attempted to adapt this tragedy into an opera at the end of the 17th century. In the latter half of the reign of Louis XIV, after the death of the great master Lully, a young and popular composer named Demaret brilliantly appeared on the scene. However, Demaret was forced to leave the country due to controversy over an unauthorized secret marriage while composing. The task of completing the supplement was given to Campra, a contemporary of Demaret's who had just completed the successful "Elegant Europe" (1697). He completed the overture, the opening act, the scene in Act I concerning the vision of Iphigénie, and most of Acts IV and V. The premiere at the Royal Academy of Music in Paris in 1704 was a success, and the opera was performed again and again until mid-century.This fantastic masterpiece, which had been buried in the past because of the fact that Campra's work was only co-written, is now available in its entirety in a recording conducted by the prodigiously talented Nike, thanks to the recent reevaluation of Demaret. The story of Iphigenie, a priestess in the temple of Diane under King Torrid, who escapes from the hands of her father King Agamemnon, encounters her brother Orestes and is saved by the gods along with other Greeks, is interpreted with magnificent singing by spirited singers with Jans and Van Mechelen in the leading roles. The work also includes many dances, and the orchestra's performance is a must-see. Yuka Saito (bass de viol) also plays the basso continuo. (Naxos Japan)
