CD2:2-4 Total recording time: 140 min. From the broadcast source (aircheck) of the Bruckner Society of America,The Bruckner From Archive, a CD release of the complete symphonies with a selection of first-ever recordings, is finally complete. Two symphonies are first-ever recordings, and the Eighth Symphony by Jochum and his Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is especially valuable because it has never been recorded before. This project is a CD release of the complete symphonies with selected sound sources, mainly from the extensive aircheck tapes of John F. Berkey, the executive director of the Bruckner Society of America, who was also active in the broadcasting industry. Benjamin Korstvedt, president of the association and a Bruckner scholar, has supervised and written the commentary, and the CDs have been released in chronological order of composition of the works. The final volume contains three pieces composed between 1887 and his death in 1896. Eugen Jochum conducted the Eighth. He conducted the Hessian Radio Symphony Orchestra (later the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra) in 1949 and made the first recording of the Eighth Symphony. Compared to that performance, the score used in this recording has been changed from the Haas edition to the Novak edition, and the first two movements seem to be more lively, while the latter two movements seem to be more fluid. The performance time is 75.5 minutes, compared to the Hessian version of just under 79 minutes. Jochum was the chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra from its founding in 1949 until 1960, and his DG recordings of Bruckner's complete symphonies include Nos. 1, 4, 7, 8, and 9, which were assigned to the Berlin Philharmonic. In his Bruckner symphonies recorded for DG, Nos. 1, 4, 7, 8, and 9 were allocated to the Berlin Philharmonic, and there was no recording of No. 8 with the Bavarians, including live recordings. This is good news for Jochum fans. Symphony No. 9 was premiered in 1903 in the Great Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (later the Vienna Symphony Orchestra) conducted by Ferdinand Löwe. What is recorded here is significant because it was performed by the same orchestra at the same venue, but the conductor is also noteworthy. Although he did not leave behind a complete symphony cycle, Sawallisch, who combines precise interpretation and solid form with a dramatic flair, has conducted the NHK Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in Japan, performing Bruckner with great skill.Compared to the 1984 recording Savarisch made with the Bavarian State Orchestra, this recording has a heavier feel with longer playing time in both movements, while the scherzo, on the other hand, is shorter, giving a more intense impression. This is also a dramatic performance with a wide range of slow and fast movements. There is a slight performance error in the first movement. Psalm 150 is conducted by Svoboda. There are only a few recordings of Bruckner, but his recording of Psalm No. 6 for Westminster is highly acclaimed, and this Psalm was released as a coupling of the two. (Naxos Japan)
