Taught by Joseph Haydn, Ignatz Pleyel (also known as Pleyel) adhered to the classical style of his predecessors, wrote numerous works with graceful and refined melodies, and was regarded as the legitimate successor of his teacher Haydn. He was also known for his activities as a score publisher and instrument maker. This album contains three of his works. Symphony No. 18 is a popular work that was published by three publishers in 1789 and distributed throughout France, northern Italy, southern Germany, and the United States.A 1790 review noted influences from Haydn's works of the 1770s, but the wind instrumentation is unique and different from Haydn's later works as well. The Viola Concerto was published simultaneously in cello and orchestral versions in 1790, and has since been reprinted many times. The solo part is not highly technical and has a cheerful atmosphere throughout. Symphony No. 21 was composed between 1782 and 1784 and published in 1790. It is one of his most freely composed symphonies, and the beautiful melody of the second movement is particularly impressive. (Naxos Japan)
