His "The Merchant of Cairo," also a favorite of Marie-Antoinette, was performed at the French royal court the year after the premiere of Mozart's "Abduction from the Hermitage," also set in the Middle East, and in Paris the following year, where it became very popular. It was a hit, and continued to be performed again until 1829, the year before Berlioz's breakthrough.Since its recording under Marc Minkowski in 1992, the work has been frequently performed and has become a pillar of Gretry's revival on ancient instruments, and now it is finally being performed by the brilliant Hervé Nicquet under the baton of Guillemette, Pervost, Emonino, and other frontline soloists in a perfect combination! The latest video from 2023 is now available! The production is vividly portrayed with 18th century style stage design and costumes and effective modern lighting, and is directed and choreographed by the talented team of Pinkoski & Zang, who are also known for their work with the famous Toronto orchestra Tafelmusik. The production is a tag team of Pinkoski and Zang. This is a musical performance film that allows you to enjoy the best interpretation of the 18th century stage, which could not have existed without dance, in the theater of Versailles, which opened with the wedding celebration of Queen Antoinette.
