Here is the latest recording of a collection of works by Grigny, one of the most important composers of the period, interpreted by two of the current resident players on the organ of the Royal Chapel of the Palace of Versailles, built during the lifetime of Louis XIV, the Sun King. Born in Reims in 1672, four years later than the great Couperin, Grigny was the resident organist at the Abbey of Saint-Denis, which had long ties with the French royal family. However, the collection of organ music in the French classical style published in 1699, which is played alternately with prayers and choruses during worship services, has become a widely influential collection of works and is still frequently played in the present day, as exemplified by the French style transcribed by the great Bach. The famous instrument of Versailles, restored to its original 1711 form, is the perfect instrument for pursuing the tonal expression envisioned by Grigny. Michel Bouvard, who continues to give recitals at the Sumitomo Seimei Izumi Hall in Osaka, performs the first half of the organ mass, while Espinas, a great master of the same school and generation, performs the second half, with five hymns, all of which are recorded without intermission. We hope you will enjoy this important work in the history of music with a solid interpretation through the interplay of beautiful sounds that can be clearly distinguished in the moderate reverberation of the chapel space.
